FMG Leading is pleased to announce that Wayland Lum has joined the firm as Managing Director, expanding the firm’s healthcare advisory practice at a moment when private capital is moving aggressively into multi-site services, hybrid care models, and operating-partner-led value creation.
Lum brings two decades of operating, strategy, and advisory experience across the healthcare services landscape. His background spans payor-provider integration, scaled multi-site operating models, and the human-capital playbooks that private equity sponsors increasingly rely on through hold-period transitions. He will partner with the firm’s existing healthcare leadership to advise CEOs, founders, and investors across executive coaching, organizational design, and culture transformation engagements.

Why now

Healthcare remains the most active sector in middle-market private equity, with investors deploying capital across primary care, behavioral health, virtual-first specialty, and home-based delivery. Sponsors increasingly look to FMG Leading not just for executive search-adjacent advisory, but for the entire arc of work that determines whether an operating thesis translates into durable EBITDA: hiring the right CEO, building the team beneath them, aligning the board, and re-pointing culture at the new mandate.

“Wayland understands what it actually takes to run a multi-site healthcare platform — and what the talent and culture decisions look like that quietly determine whether a hold period ends well or doesn't.”

— Matt Brubaker, CEO, FMG Leading

“Wayland is one of the rare advisors who has lived the operating realities our clients are navigating — opening new sites at pace, integrating acquired groups, professionalizing functions for institutional ownership,” said Matt Brubaker, CEO of FMG Leading. “His perspective makes our healthcare bench measurably stronger, and his timing could not be better for the work we’re doing with sponsors and management teams.”

Focus and capabilities

In his new role, Lum will focus on engagements with PE-backed healthcare services platforms — particularly those at the inflection points between founder-led operating models and the institutional discipline a second or third round of capital tends to demand. His client work will sit alongside the firm’s broader healthcare practice, which advises portfolio CEOs, leadership teams, and investment professionals across executive coaching, board alignment, organization design, culture audits, and post-close integration planning.
“FMG Leading has built a practice that the best operators and sponsors trust to be in the room when the hardest conversations happen,” said Lum. “I’m joining because the firm is one of the few places where the work spans both the human and the operational sides of value creation — and because the healthcare opportunity in front of us is the most interesting it has been in a decade.”
