A purpose-driven biotech, scaling at investor pace.
Founded in 2001, Sound Physicians is a privately-held provider of inpatient services based in Tacoma, Washington. It has grown into one of the largest physician groups in the country with over 2,500 physicians delivering emergency medicine, critical care, transitional care, and hospital medicine in over 350 healthcare systems, hospitals, and post-acute facilities throughout the United States. Sound Physicians cares for more than 1.6 million patients annually.
Introduction
When physician expertise wasn't enough.
As Sound Physicians continued to grow, employee survey data revealed a critical challenge. While Chief Hospitalists were highly skilled clinicians, many lacked the leadership and management capabilities needed to effectively lead teams, engage colleagues, and support organizational growth.
At the same time, experienced physician leaders were becoming increasingly difficult to recruit and retain. Sound Physicians recognized that developing leadership capabilities internally would not only strengthen performance across the organization but also create a significant competitive advantage in attracting future physician leaders.
CEO Rob Bessler, MD, made leadership development a strategic priority and partnered with FMG Leading to create a scalable solution aligned with Sound Physicians’ mission, vision, and values.
Partnership
Building physician leaders from the inside out.
FMG Leading partnered with Sound Physicians to design a customized physician leadership development program known as the Chief Summit Initiative (CSI).
Rather than relying on generic leadership models, the program was built around the specific competencies that Sound Physicians’ executive team identified as essential for successful leadership within their organization. The curriculum addressed critical skill gaps while creating a shared leadership framework focused on what physician leaders needed to know, be, and do.
The two-day immersive experience combined leadership fundamentals, communication skills, self-awareness, delegation, coaching, and performance management. Participants also completed DISC behavioral assessments, helping them better understand their leadership styles and improve interactions with colleagues and team members.
As participation grew and positive feedback accumulated, Sound Physicians expanded the program beyond Chief Hospitalists to include physicians and nursing leaders preparing for future leadership roles.
