From the lowest-performing region to a leadership legacy.

In 2000, Maritza Gomez Montiel was appointed Regional Managing Partner for Deloitte’s Central Atlantic Region—the lowest-performing division within the U.S. firm.

Determined to transform performance, strengthen collaboration, and create greater alignment among leaders, Maritza partnered with FMG Leading to help her team move from worst to best.

What began as a regional performance-improvement initiative would eventually influence leadership development across one of the world’s largest professional services organizations.

Over the next two years, FMG Leading worked closely with Maritza and her leadership team to improve teamwork, accelerate execution, and strengthen organizational alignment. Through strategic planning sessions, executive coaching, and leadership development initiatives, the Central Atlantic Region began a remarkable transformation.

As Maritza’s success gained attention throughout Deloitte, she was promoted to lead increasingly larger business units before being selected to spearhead one of the firm’s most ambitious talent initiatives: the creation of Deloitte University.

FMG Leading became a strategic advisor in the design and development of Deloitte University and created NextGen, a comprehensive leadership development program focused on assessment, coaching, mentoring, and executive readiness for future leaders.

The Central Atlantic Region evolved from Deloitte’s lowest-performing division into its fastest-growing region. Maritza’s leadership success resulted in multiple promotions, culminating in her appointment as Deputy CEO and Vice Chairman.

The leadership systems developed through Deloitte University and the NextGen program became foundational elements of Deloitte’s culture, helping the firm attract, develop, and retain world-class talent while supporting continued global growth.

The NextGen program remains active today, having accelerated the development of hundreds of high-potential leaders across multiple generations of Deloitte executives.
